IFS or Internal Family Systems Therapy developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, is an evidence - based modality of psychotherapy. IFS can be used to explore different parts of us that can show up or make us feel a certain way. Sometimes parts of us that want to do something and parts that don’t. IFS uses an understanding of systems thinking and multiplicity of mind and offers a non-pathologising, empowering and transformative approach to understanding how we think or how parts of us feel. Whether it is decision making, money burdens, worry, grief or struggles with food and body image we can understand inner conflict and wounded parts using an approach of compassion, curiosity and our core wisdom know as Self in IFS.
Using creative interventions such as sand tray therapy, miniatures, drawing and painting can expand an understanding where words can sometimes lack or are hard to find. It can be a helpful way of looking at ourselves in an external way and seeing where we might find ourselves in relation to another or our emotions. You can make art and talk or make art in silence and often looking and working with your art will make sense of thoughts, feelings and experiences that arise through the process.
Depression and anxiety can have roots that we might not yet know about. IFS teaches us to be curious and compassionate to the parts of us that have worked so hard to cope. In a safe, non-judgemental space with the experience of unconditional positive regard by another, we can overcome feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and despair. Insights into your feelings, triggers and patterns of behaviour, can help understanding of why we do what we do, and how we have come to be the way that we are.
Trauma counselling can help you overcome the effects of traumatic events. Using evidence-based techniques including IFS, you can begin to heal from the psychological impact of trauma, including PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Ellie provides a safe and supportive environment where you can explore your experiences and develop strategies to move forward.
Grief counselling can help you cope with the loss of a loved one. Within a safe, kind and supportive environment you can explore your feelings of grief, feel free to express your pain and talk, and develop strategies to manage your grief and move forward.
Anger management counselling can help you manage and understand angry parts of you in healthy ways; along with support to help you make sense of why anger can come up. Using an IFS approach develops coping skills, and improves your relationships with yourself and others.

Ellie is a person-centred counsellor with a psychology and IFS background, and focuses on creating a safe, warm, non-judgemental relationship where you feel able to take risks and explore any suffering, confusion or curiosity that you may come with.
Ellie's intention will be to listen deeply, beyond just your words, so that together you can make sense of the landscape in which you find yourself. In Ellie's experience it is this quality of relationship that enables people to shift in ways that facilitate lasting and meaningful change.
As someone who is also very interested in the wider scope of psychotherapy and psychology, Ellie draws on her understanding of contemporary theory. For example, how our nervous systems are regulated, the relationship between mind and body, child development and how our wellbeing is interconnected with the wider systems of family, culture, sexuality, class, race and planet.
The best way to get a sense of how Ellie works and to see if you and her are a good fit, is to arrange either a brief call or an initial session.
Ellie offers a complimentary initial session of 30 minutes to see how working together might feel and to get a sense of a good fit for the counselling relationship. This can be done in person or online.
Subsequent sessions are charged at £55 for an hour with a rolling deposit of £30 taken in the case of late cancellations.
Ellie works from her home office in Newton Abbot with parking and from therapy rooms in Gandy Street, Exeter (by request).
Yes, online counselling is an option and can be discussed with Ellie.
Once agreeing to work together, you and Ellie will start with a thorough biopsychosocial assessment. Through this assessment we gain a clear understanding of different elements from the past, present and future that might affect you both negatively and positively. The assessment provides essential information to develop a working plan tailored to your individual needs and therapeutic goals
After the assessment Ellie will work with you to collaborate on a working plan, taking time to listen, getting curious about your goals with kindness and respect. Working collaboratively we will agree on the support you need with the purpose of creating a relationship as a container to explore, for personal growth and self-discovery.
The type of therapy and length of treatment will depend largely on the needs presented, this will also be true of the delivery; whether online, in person or joining a group.
